The third winemaker in our Series is Liam Heslop of Heslop Wines. Heslop Wines is a small family owned vineyard in the heart of Mudgee. Liam along with his father Bob and mother Julie all work together to create traditional blends, innovative styles and exceptional wines.
Heslop Wines produce handcrafted small batch premium wine. Using a sustainable approach on the property ensures they tread lightly on our environment. This includes hand picking to pruning in the vineyard and minimal intervention winemaking methods such as gentle crushing, hand plunging, and basket pressing. All of the wine is produced by hand, even the bottling and labelling is done on site.
Liam Heslop - Heslop Wines
What made you decide to become a winemaker?
I took a gap year and worked a vintage at Huntington Estate, loved it!
What year did you become a winemaker?
I Graduated from the University of Adelaide in 2005.
Which grape varietals do you grow at Heslop?
My father, Bob Heslop, started planting the vineyard in 1984. Chardonnay, Vermentino, Sauvignon blanc, White Frontignac, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tinta Cão, Touriga Nacional, Zinfandel, Black Muscat.
What is the most interesting part of your job?
Vintage time, there is so much going on and so many decisions to make.
What is your favourite season in the winemaking process?
Spring. Pruning is finished, blending and bottling of last year’s reds is underway, the vineyard comes alive, and there is so much excitement and anticipation for the season ahead.
Has your job changed over the last 10 years?
I joined the family business mid-2017 after working with David Lowe for 10 years.
What is your biggest challenge you have met along the way?
Vintage, each one is different and has its own set of challenges.
What is the best wine you have ever drunk and why?
1956 Vouvray. It was a combination of the wine and environment. When a 50 year old wine looks like it’s only 15, it sticks in your mind. In addition, it was during my second time to California for vintage and the small winery I worked for took the crew to Vegas, where we drank this wine among others at a very expensive restaurant.
What do you think is the biggest myth about drinking wine?
All wines improve with age.
Regardless of cost, what do you think makes a good wine?
Attention to detail.
What is your favourite varietal or blend you enjoy drinking the most?
Riesling (at the moment).
Outside of Mudgee, what is your favourite wine region in the world?
It’s just impossible to choose one!
