Our Top 10 Favourite Stops in Mudgee
Updated: Feb 4, 2021
Whether it is a full day tour from 10am to 4pm or one of our half day tours, 10-1pm and 1:30-4:30pm, your family or friends will have a wonderful time touring with us. We showcase the beautiful Mudgee region and all the wine and produce which is on offer.
Our 10 top favourites spots in no particular order are:
Skimstone Wines
Nestled in the hills at Apple Tree Flat, Skimstone Wines has spectacular views and spectacular wine. Sangiovese, Merlot, Chardonnay and Barbera varietals give a Mediterranean influence across their range which are delicate yet full of flavour. Their french winemaker pays particular attention to getting the balance of fruit and oak into every bottle.

2. Rosby Estate
A few kilometres out of town is the gorgeous property of Rosby Estate. Gerry has so much knowledge about the area and his vineyard and cellar door is second to none. Why not try their Moscato or do a vertical tasting of their Shiraz. Gerry's wife Kay runs the art gallery which is a part of the cellar door and she has different exhibitions throughout the year. They also have stunning accommodation options.

3. Lazy Oak Vineyard
A little bit further down Henry Lawson Drive is the family owned business of Lazy Oak. Here you will find Mudgee's only White Merlot which is light and easy to drink or try their award winning Rosé. Tastings with Paula are a delight where she shares the family history of how they began their venture into wine making. It is also the home of the Mudgee Wine School.

4. 53 Food Co
For the best burgers in town you can't go past 53 Food Co. Situated in the grounds of Huntington Estate, this burger van produces food which really hits the spot when you have been tasting wine all morning. We love to include them in our wine tours for our lunch stop on our full day tours to give a break off tasting and also to help reset your taste buds for the afternoon session. While you are there don't miss the onion rings or wedges!

5. 791 Estate
Formerly Farmer's Daughter and then Eloquesta, Fiona and Brendan have transformed this property into a beautiful picturesque cellar door where the tastings are vibrant and fun. Choose between Chardonnay, Rosé, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon or enjoy walking around the property petting the numerous animals they have roaming around. They also have great options when it comes to having something to eat, enjoy their platters of regional produce or tuck into a pork slider. Not to be missed!

6. Elephant Mountain Wines
Elephant Mountain prune the vines each year to achieve low yielding vines. This optimises the flavours in the grapes during ripening before harvest. Minimal sprays are used in the vineyard and wherever possible none at all. The grapes are handpicked at their optimal ripeness to achieve a balanced and digestible wine requiring minimal additives in the wine making process. Their wine is especially sought after by those who are sensitive to chemicals and preservatives.

7. Robert Stein Winery
Home to delicious Riesling and Sparkling Shiraz, Robert Stein Winery is always on our tasting list. They stock a wide range of varietals including Gewurtztraminer, Sémillon, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Fortified Wine. Also on the property is the outstanding Pipeclay Pumphouse Restaurant and the Robert Stein Motorcycle Museum.

8. High Valley Cheese
The only cheese making facility in Mudgee, High Valley Cheese has won many awards for their delicious cheeses. Their milk is sourced from a local dairy in Dubbo and the cheese is made every week. Not to be missed is the Pesto Feta or their Smoked Cheddar. Their cheeses pair beautifully with Mudgee wine and Fortified wine.

9. Pieter van Gent Winery
We often finish the day at Pieter van Gent as they have a good range of fortified wines (formerly known as port!) Their Pipeclay White and Pink fortifieds are great mixed as cocktail bases where you add lime and ice or you can enjoy their Tawny or Whiskey fortified. Accommodation and bike hire is also available.

10.10's Estate
The new kids on the block! An organic winery and cherry orchard, the vines are hand-pruned and machine-harvested as they place an increasing effort on sustainable practices such as the use of compost mulch to increase soil health and drip irrigation to reduce water usage. They only have a merlot and a cabernet sauvignon but at this time of the year a visit also includes trying their delicious cherries!
