It is cherry season at Roth's Family Orchard in Mudgee. It is the time of the year that the locals in the area look forward to. Big fat juicy cherries!
They grow: Sambas – big and beautiful – last week of November
Rons – Black and sweet – late November/early December
Vans – Red & tasty – early December
Black Star – dark, firm and full of flavour – early December
Simone – very tasty, red to mahogany – second week of December The farm is open from the 30th of November until December 16 Fridays through to Mondays., 7.30am-1pm. Prices are $5 per adult entry and then the cherries are $5.50 per kilo. The cherries are best picked early in the morning as the fruit stays fresher for longer. It is also a great idea to stay out of the heat later in the day!
Don't forget to take something to put your cherries into to take home. Cherries are best put into shallow layers so you don't squash the bottom ones.
It is great fun for all the family, just make sure you bring a hat and sunscreen and some drinking water.
