The Mudgee region is one of the country’s most beautiful wine regions and located four hours North West of Sydney. It is close enough for a weekend getaway where you will unwind and relax and forget about your busy life in the city.
Having lived in the Mudgee region now for ten years, I have tasted quite a few of the wines on offer and without doubt one of my favourite wineries is SlowFox. This family owned vineyard is found out on Black Springs Road where it is surrounded by Pieter van Gent, Petersons and Huntington Estate. With only 7Ha of vines planted these guys are small scale operators. Greg and Kate have small batch, hand picked and hand made wines with minimal intervention, and I promise you, your palate will be rewarded! They do wild yeast ferments when they can and basket press the smaller batches before putting them in a mixture of French and American oak barrels.
The first time I ever tasted a Malbec was in Shanghai in a restaurant overlooking the Bund. My American friend bought a bottle of Chilean Malbec and I never looked back. The loam and clay hills of Mudgee are perfect for Malbec and SlowFox has produced a wine which is medium to full bodied and beautifully coloured. They are the only vineyard in Mudgee to produce a Malbec which makes it even more special. With no aggressive tannins food pairing options are easy. Enjoy duck, turkey, lean red meats or pork and add sage, creamy mushroom sauce, pepper or blue cheese.
They pick their Shiraz a little early to make a light dry salmon coloured Rosé and later to create a true to varietal style red. The Rosé is a French style where the wine is left on skins for a short time to give it the gorgeous colour and dry finish. It matches perfectly with those naughty nibbles we love to have before dinner. Cheese, olives, dips and chips, actually the saltier the better! Later on in the night when you are eating braised beef cheeks or a lamb leg roast, crack a bottle of their Shiraz. It is rich and full bodied and is the perfect choice.
They predominantly grow Cabernet and do a variety of styles from different sections of the vineyard. Their Reserve Cabernet comes from non irrigated bush vines on the river flats, and their straight Cabernet from the higher ground non trellised vines. They use their trellised Cabernet in a Bordeaux style blend with Merlot and a small percentage of Malbec for a soft round easy drinking red. They also make a Cabernet/Malbec blend for a big bold fruit driven wine. For the whites why not try their Viogner which is picked early to make a beautiful and balanced light and fresh style tasting almost like a the best parts of a Sav blanc and a chardonnay blended together.
These wines are to be enjoyed with friends, and what better place to share them when you next visit Mudgee. Be sure to book a tour with us and we will take you out to Slowfox to find out for yourself. You can find out more at www.slowfoxwines.com or phone them on (02) 6373 3087. They are open for tastings Friday to Sunday from 11-5 or by appointment.
